My goal was to make the people of the present aware of the attributes and actions of the authoritarian leaders of the past so that the people of the present can be more wary of people that want to gain political power and judge them in a more logical fashion (unlike in the past which led to the power of several dictators). I wanted to teach people these traits of authoritarian leaders with the help of several case studies and case study evaluations.
The project was extremely challenging since the project (a publish-length book about authoritarian leaders and why people “fell” for them—with the help of case studies) required an amazing amount of research from a variety of sources and also required critical thinking about how to use the resources I found and in what capacity. A lot of deliberation backed by research went into deciding what case studies to use, which traits to accentuate and focus on, and what I wanted peoples’ takeaway from the book to be.
The global context for my project was identities and relationships. I chose this global context because a major theme of my book was going to be the psychology and mindset (Identities) of the manipulative leaders and also to a lower extent, the mindset of the followers who would very often be manipulated by them. A big part of dictatorship is the trust the people of a nation tends to have in its leader (oftentimes unjustified,) and that in its essence is a human relationship, which is the base of the global context of Identities and relationships.
